In humble gratitude I wish to relate my first experience...

In humble gratitude I wish to relate my first experience in Christian Science. For a number of years I had been a semi-invalid, suffering from liver trouble; and other organs were not functioning properly. My physician then told me that medicine could do no more for me. Electric treatments were taken for some months, but to no avail. When I told this to a lady living in the house with me, she recommended Christian Science. As I knew nothing about it, I doubted it, but her firmness gave me a little hope. That night I told my husband what the lady had said, and asked him if I should try this Science. He said to try anything that would help me.

This was in the fall of 1907. I went to the Christian Science Reading Room the next day and borrowed the textbook. When I put this book under my arm I felt that the world was mine; and yet as I sat down to read, I did not see how a book could help me, but if there was anything in it I wanted to find it. I read the book every spare moment that I had. On the ninth day, as I sat sewing, these words from the Bible came to me: "The prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him." I believed that Christ Jesus healed the sick, and that God could make me well now. Then it came to me to throw out my medicine. I arose to do so, when the suggestion came, What will you do when you need it? I hesitated, and then seemed to hear a voice saying, Well! I finally threw out the medicine, and realized that I was restored to health. I tried to pray, but found I could not speak for a few minutes. I was on holy ground. This holy peace and calm stayed with me for weeks. I commenced at once to do my own housework with ease, a thing I had not done for a very long time. This healing has been permanent.

Christian Science has met my every need in these years. I am grateful to God for all these blessings; also for class instruction; to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and to our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.—(Mrs.) Jeannette W. Mitchell, Dorchester, Massachusetts.
