"Freely ye have received, freely give."

"Freely ye have received, freely give." So much of good has come to me through Christian Science and through the giving of Christian Scientists, that my hope is that I may give something in this testimony which will help others, as well as express to some extent my deep gratitude for Christian Science, for our inspired Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and for The Mother Church, its branches, and all the activities through which this wonderful Science is being made manifest and practical in this age.

From childhood I was always seeking for truth, but was never humble enough to see it. Although Christian Science was presented to me at two different times during my childhood and early youth, I was too occupied with the pride and pleasures of material life to accept it. Yet, one by one, these turned to dust and ashes in my hand. I believed myself to be an agnostic and that the Bible was not authentic. Finally I came to the place where I experienced complete nervous exhaustion and with it a weak heart. A doctor told me that I should never be strong again, and that I should have to content myself with being inactive, a semi-invalid for the rest of my life.

During a trip to Florida for my health, a friend advised that I get "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read it. Later I bought the book and read it almost constantly during the following week. Sometimes during that period, I do not know when, the nervous condition and heart trouble, which had been pronounced incurable, left me. Then I suddenly realized one day that I was healthy, joyous, and free. I had begun the new birth in Christian Science. I thought, as our beloved Leader writes in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 16), "In mine infancy, this is enough of heaven to come down to earth."
