"Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we...
"Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare."
Eight years ago, while I was traveling on the ocean to New York, a Herald of Christian Science (French Edition) was given to me, and with great astonishment I read for the first time about Christian Science healing. After this revelation I could hardly wait until I got a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. First I read it entirely through, and afterwards I studied regularly the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. The Herald, which I bought every month, was a very great help to my understanding of the Lesson. This study brought wonderful blessings to me, manifested in spiritual growth and material gain.
Errors such as envy and jealousy very often tried to make me lose my position, but my motto was, "If God is for me, who can be against me?" Suddenly my mother passed on, and my father, overcome with sorrow, became mentally deranged. As he refused help from all doctors, I had a practitioner work for him. I thought it probably would be better for me to stay with him. I asked the practitioner to advise me about it, but she said that she could not give me any advice. She would, however, work for me so that I should be led to do the right thing. A few days after I got the letter from the practitioner, I thought continuously of the healing of the centurion's servant in Capernaum. When the centurion called for help for his servant, Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him." But the centurion said, "Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed." After that I was very quiet, for that was God's answer. My father was better, but was not completely healed, and I asked a practitioner why the healing was not complete. She said, "Perhaps you think too much of your material father; do not forget that there is only one 'Father-Mother God, all-harmonious'" (Science and Health, p. 16). When I understood this, my father was healed.
