The Christian Science Road

The Christian Science road is the road to absolute perfection, the road to reality. The way is, indeed, straight and narrow, and leads us to where the sons and daughters of God are singing for joy. So let us follow the way, pressing purposefully on with our glorious goal constantly before our thoughts. When this is done with gladness the way will not seem laborious.

Two ways there are of following the Christian Science road. The one is by watching our feet and the road itself. The other is by keeping our eyes on the goal of spiritual perfection. To some careful travelers it may seem necessary to watch lest they stumble, or dash their feet against a stone. Thus they may have to divide their attention between the goal and the road. Clearer-visioned travelers perceive that, the way being perfectly straight, if they keep their eyes steadily fixed on the goal it will be impossible for them to wander out of the way. Our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 426), "The discoverer of Christian Science finds the path less difficult when she has the high goal always before her thoughts, than when she counts her footsteps in endeavoring to reach it."

How may we progress most rapidly on the Christian Science road? This important question has been answered definitely on page 495 of Science and Health, where we are advised, "Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit." Let us then study thoroughly the guidebooks that have been provided for our journey from sense to Soul, and persevere until their words become a part of us. Better even a few pages pondered over than many pages read, for merely to read, in the ordinary sense, is neither to study nor to imbibe.
