Diligent in Business

From all sides we hear about "business" and "business conditions." Certain conditions are said to be favorable to business, and certain others unfavorable. When unfavorable conditions seem to control the field, plunging business into a chaotic state, right effort, guided by Christianly scientific thinking, will extricate it.

One of the first obstacles to be overcome on our way to a genuine business recovery program is an apparently prevalent belief that "business conditions" create and govern themselves independently of human thinking, planning, and action. Though recognizing that we are engaged in business, no one of us is overeager to acknowledge that he is in any degree responsible for its attendant evils. The human mind is not much given to self-correction. It seems more comfortable, more of a balm to our self-respect, to believe that we are adversely affected by "bad business conditions" over which we have no control, than to admit that our business is adversely affected by our own wrong thinking, over which we can and should have control.

The fact is that, generally speaking, this business which we are talking about expresses the controlling thought of men. Men think over this business, plan it, work at it, and struggle unhappily over its ever-recurring difficulties, for which they are largely responsible through entertaining error in thought.
