When Christian Science first came into my experience,...
When Christian Science first came into my experience, more than thirty years ago, I looked to it only for the physical restoration of one dear to me, as all other means had failed. When asked to read the book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I did so from a sense of duty, and the words seemed to mean nothing to me. As I continued to read, the first gleam of light came when, on page 226 of this blessed book, the following lines stood out: "The lame, the deaf, the dumb, the blind, the sick, the sensual, the sinner, I wished to save from the slavery of their own beliefs and from the educational systems of the Pharaohs, who to-day, as of yore, hold the children of Israel in bondage." That was my key; and with Isaiah I could say, "For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little."
The Bible, heretofore a closed book, opened up its glorious pages, illumined and inspired by what had been gained from the reading of the textbook. That is not all. Bronchitis, laryngitis, a stubborn cough, all had vanished without my being aware of it. Physicians and well-known specialists had been consulted year in and year out since my childhood, but only temporary relief was given. I was told that the climate was against me, and that I could not expect a cure while living so near Lake Michigan. I accepted this verdict and continued to suffer until Christian Science found me. What had happened? The climate had not changed, but my whole nature was undergoing a renovation from false beliefs to a better way of thinking. Since then, this blessed truth has been my guide, my comfort, my help through dark days and through sunshine. My gratitude to our brave Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, to Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, and to each and every one who has held and is holding to the light, is daily growing.—(Mrs.) Olga C. Foreman, Chicago, Illinois.
