From Letters, Substantially as Published

From the contents of the Open Forum department in your issue of February 14, it is evident that the conductor of the department questions the Bible and doubts that Christ Jesus made statements that are credited to him. Then it is not surprising that the contributor implies that Christian Science is mistaken when it associated mental healing with religion. More space than you could spare would be required if I were to go adequately into these foundational points of Christianity, but I should like to state that Christian Science recognizes the Bible as the guide for true living, accepts without reservation the words and works of the Master, and acknowledges the omnipresence and omnipotence of God, divine Love. And also I should like to indicate briefly the close relation of true mental healing to the Christian religion.

Obviously the primary purpose of the Christian religion is to destroy sin and to help men and women to lead lives that are more honest, pure, and lovely. The experiences of Christian Scientists show that the correction of moral shortcomings through Christian Science is invariably accompanied by the healing of physical ills. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 404) Mary Baker Eddy says, "Healing the sick and reforming the sinner are one and the same thing Christian Science." The great success of Christian Science in simultaneously destroying sin and disease proves that spiritual healing is an essential factor in this religion.
