Overcoming Depression

On page 174 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practised." The Christian Scientist has a glorious opportunity to prove that the truth he knows about God and man overcomes the false claims of lack, depression, and discouragement. If alert, he will guard his thought carefully so that these negative qualities cannot enter his consciousness or find expression in his daily life and conversation.

The Christian Scientist may not personally experience these false conditions but may be believing they are true for others. If his prayer and thought are for the universal good, they will lessen to some extent the weight of false belief for all mankind.

Some time ago a student of Science found himself in a state of deep mental depression quite unlike what he regarded as his natural disposition. Suggestions of failure and discouragement came repeatedly until he began to accept them as true and as a part of his own thinking. Error argued: "You are not making any progress; in fact, you are going backward. Your work is poor and you are incapable of filling your present position. Why not resign these duties to others who are better prepared to execute them?"
