"A lively hope" (I Pet. 1:3)—The word rendered "lively" is the regular Greek term for "living" (zosan). Thus Weymouth (5th edition) renders "a living hope"; Moffatt and Goodspeed, "a life of hop."
Ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations" (I Pet. 1:6)—The Greek word "peirasmoi," here translated "temptations," means literally "trials" (Thayer: Greek Lexicon, p. 498), and a literal translation would be: "Being grieved by varied trials." Goodspeed renders: "Distressed by various
"The trial of your faith ... tried fire" (I Pet. 1:7)—It may be observed that the word "dokimon" (trial) means literally "proving," and should be distinguished from the "temptations" ("peirasmoi"—literally "trials") of the preceding verse; similarly, "tried" is more exactly "proved." Compare the rendering of the similarly, "tried" is more exactly "proved." Compare the rendering of the Revised Version: "The proof of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perisheth, though it is proved by fire."
