I am especially grateful for the healing of a severe burn, which my daughter experienced when she was a small child. There was a pan of candy cooking on the stove, and before I realized what was taking place, the child climbed up on a chair next to the stove, lost her balance and had fallen, her right hand going into the boiling candy. Her screams frightened me for the moment, and my first thought was how to remove the sticky substance which covered the whole hand and a portion of her arm. As soon, however, as I could reach a telephone, a Christian Science practitioner was called, and within a very short time the pain ceased and the child was quiet. I am grateful to add that she did not lose a single night's sleep.
Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 392), "Stand porter at the door of thought." It was a real testing time, but I knew that if I stood firm for the truth, the ever-presence of good would be manifested. After one week of treatment the practitioner was dismissed. Mortal mind argued that the child would never use her hand again. The fact that she later studied and played the piano is sufficient evidence that the use of her hand and arm was completely restored.
This proved to be a great revelation to my mother and friends who were not interested in Christian Science. My mother's remark was, "A miracle has happened." Our beloved Leader tells us on page 134 of Science and Health, "A miracle fulfils God's law, but does not violate that law." I had already learned something of God's law of love, so I told my mother why the pain had ceased so suddenly and the child had been able to sleep. Since then she has witnessed several healings of my children, including one of influenza.
