Human Footsteps Indispensable

In that marvelously spiritual and practical chapter of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" so well named "Footsteps of Truth," our inspired Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says (pp. 253, 254), "The divine demand, 'Be ye therefore perfect,' is scientific, and the human footsteps leading to perfection are indispensable;" and she continues: "But the human self must be evangelized. This task God demands us to accept lovingly to-day, and to abandon so fast as practical the material, and to work out the spiritual which determines the outward and actual."

This is the task before us, to evangelize the human self; to accept this task lovingly; to take the human footsteps leading to the goal; to continue to labor without yielding to discouragement; to wait (stand in readiness) for God's direction with unconquerable patience and heavenly hope. By taking these legitimate footsteps we work with spiritual law instead of against it, and divine Mind is the governing power which shapes our outward experience.

One definition of "evangelize" is, "To pervade with the spirit and harmonize with the doctrines of the gospel." To facilitate progress in abandoning the material our thought must be permeated with the spirit which Jesus had, and we must harmonize our lives with his teachings.
