While proper safeguards should surround the issuance of Christian Science literature from lending libraries connected with Reading Rooms and Sunday schools, the way in which to borrow literature should not be made too difficult, nor the free offer of literature be allowed to fail of its purpose.

The librarians in The Mother Church Reading Rooms, each of whom cares for a lending library of the books and periodicals of our movement, are free to use discretion in the lending of literature to those who are not sufficiently acquainted with any Christian Scientists to give their names as references. The result, in almost all instances, has been helpful.

A practitioner writes to The Christian Science Board of Directors that she sent a patient to the Reading Room nearest home in order to borrow a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." The patient was newly interested in Christian Science on behalf of her sister, who had had a serious accident, and was willing to read the book. Naturally the patient was not acquainted with any member of the local church who could sign a recommendation for her, although she gave the name of the practitioner who was helping her, but who resided outside of the district. The book was not forthcoming. Another physical difficulty in the family made the applicant for the book still more desirous of having it and she again asked for it, but again failed to obtain it, the reason being that the rule governing the lending of the book was rigid, calling for approval of the borrower by a member of the church maintaining the Reading Room. Finally, however, the matter was arranged.
