From Mystery to Mastery

For Christian Scientists, the greatest blessing their religion has brought them has been a consciousness of God's ever-presence and availability. They have learned to think of Deity not as a remote and hazy finite personality, but as the Being whose presence is ever comforting and inspiring.

Christian Scientists have learned to know God, because Christian Science explains Him in terms that anyone may understand. They have learned names for God which have come actually to mean something to them in daily experience. These names are Life, Truth, Love, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Principle. In using these names for God, Christian Scientists are led to think of the All-in-all in terms of divine quality and function.

Thinking of God thus they find it easier and more natural to reflect divine qualities in their everyday experience. To know God as Life helps one to live a full, useful, vigorous life. To think of God as Truth is beneficial in detecting error and falsehood, and supplanting them with eternal verities. One's affection for one's fellow men is enriched by his knowing that God is Love. Understanding and perspicacity are promoted by the consciousness that God is Mind. The commonly accepted limitations of mortal existence are overcome by a comprehension of God as infinite Soul. Dependence upon material ways and means is reduced proportionably to our understanding of the liberating concept of God as Spirit. And the problem of creation is elucidated by a knowledge of God as Principle. It should be remembered, however, that these are only different names for the one God.
