In April, 1931, I was spending a holiday at home with my parents, and they told me of Christian Science, with which they had recently become acquainted. I read various passages in Science and Health, but came to the conclusion that Christian Science was not for such as I, the mother of four small children. However, to please my parents, I attended a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, I regret to say with a strong feeling of criticism. On entering the hall I was immediately impressed with the happy faces around me, and I sat listening to the testimonies in astonishment. On my return home, my attitude towards Christian Science was entirely changed. It seemed to me to be the most wonderful religion of which I had ever heard, and I resolved to find out all I could about it.
On returning to my home town, however, I encountered great opposition from my husband, which resulted in unhappiness for both of us. In spite of this, I could not give up my study of Christian Science, and I knew harmony would be restored in God's own way. The following August our eldest little boy, aged seven, was suddenly found to be suffering from tuberculosis. Our doctor and a specialist pronounced his case very serious, and strongly urged us to send him to a sanatorium, for his own sake and because of the other little ones.
After discussing the matter in every way, my husband asked me if I really thought that Christian Science would cure the child. I told him I felt sure it would. "In that case," he answered, "you may ask a practitioner to treat him." This I joyfully did, and I studied Science and Health and the Bible as much as I could. In a few days' time the boy, who had not ceased coughing day or night, and who looked very thin and ill, started to improve, and the cough disappeared. Although he was under the supervision of the specialist, we gave him no medicine or special foods, and allowed him to be with his little sisters and brother as usual. To our great joy, he steadily improved day by day, and by November we decided that he was again ready to attend school. Before this was possible, however, we had to obtain a certificate from the specialist. He was amazed at the appearance of the child, and after careful examination pronounced him perfectly sound in both lungs.
