From my earliest recollections I had attacks of indigestion, accompanied by a general upset physical condition. I had the idea that it was an inheritance—something I should always have to endure. As I grew up the attacks became more frequent and more severe. I was so miserable that I finally began treatment with local physicians, who were very kind, but whose treatments had almost no effect. I then went to a specialist in a city some distance away. It took a great deal of time and I was most obedient, but a cure was not effected.
At that period, one Wednesday evening, my wife proposed that we attend the Christian Science meeting. We were both impressed, and after the meeting asked what we could read to learn something about this Science. A copy of the textbook was lent us, and when an attack of indigestion came, I applied what I had read and found it worked. In those days I had great fear of food, but the physical healing came very quickly. The understanding of the Bible, of both Old and New Testaments, which has come from the study of Christian Science is, course, of the greatest value. I little realized at first the influence that Christian Science would have in my life, for it has almost completely changed my thinking.
I soon joined the local Christian Science Society and became active in its work, joined The Mother Church, and later had class instruction—a great privilege. There has been much to give up, but unnumbered blessings have been gained. I have been greatly helped and protected in business. I enjoy a degree of physical freedom and activity I did not have as a boy, and a mental freedom I did not realize existed. I have found Science requires constant study and application, and does not lead to what the world calls popularity; but it brings satisfying results in depth of character. I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for making the truth so practical.
