Nothing for Error to Cling To
"Truth , Life, and Love are a law of annihilation to everything unlike themselves, because they declare nothing except God." Proportionately as the truth of these words from page 243 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy is understood and applied, will the student banish from his life that which is unlike good. More and more it is being realized that cause is mental, including the so-called cause of the world's troubles; hence to throw off thoughts which cause trouble must free one from troublesome experience.
A helpful lesson is found in the story of Paul's experience on the island of Melita. Rescued from shipwreck, he was helping in building a fire when a viper fastened on his hand. Those who believed that the sting of the viper was poisonous expected Paul to die within a few minutes; but his thinking was along a different line, for we read that "he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm." The danger associated with the reptile appeared in belief to be imminent, but that did not affect the apostle. Students of Christian Science find that errors are easier to handle when the mortal illusions are ruled out immediately, instead of being permitted to linger and assume large and objectionable proportions. Promptness in rejecting error is a major consideration in all Christian Science work.
One's power to help and heal is governed largely by one's willingness and ability to throw off erroneous suggestions, and to replace them with the truth about God and man. Coincident with the expulsion of suggestions is the elimination of false burdens, for it is neither necessary nor right to carry burdens which God never made. We must drop burdens if we would be prepared to receive blessings. Through right thinking we find our present need is met. This is the purpose of right thinking, and if it were not for the resultant good, how should we know that we were thinking rightly?
