I should like to avail myself of the opportunity to express...
I should like to avail myself of the opportunity to express gratitude for Christian Science. I have been benefited throughout the period of my life when this religion was relied upon. Diseases, so called, of early childhood, as well as many problems, both mental and physical, were overcome through the help of my mother or a practitioner.
Though a recipient of good throughout my early life, attributable to Christian Science, it was not until three years ago, during the summer preceding my registration for the third year at college, that I saw a need for radical reliance on God. I needed a job at school to help with expenses if I was to finish the course of studies begun. Indecision and doubt entered into my thinking because of the seeming impossibility of finding work. Several talks with a practitioner, however, revealed to me that I needed only to rely on infinite Mind, to rejoice for the blessings already present. Through a more thorough study of Science I began to see that as a student I was very lax and indifferent in the application of the teachings of Christian Science. I was mesmerized by a belief that because I had no associates who were interested in the same religion, to become an active student of this Science would mean social isolation; also that I could receive good on the one hand and at the same time on the other entertain a false concept of friendship, pleasure, and supply.
Knowledge of Truth was unfolding—as much as I was prepared to accept—and with an attempt to see myself as God sees me, that is, as actively expressing Him through good thoughts and services, I found employment soon after registering at school. Ways opened up for me not only to complete the third year but also to finish college the following year, when financial conditions seemed more discouraging. The grades received during the last two years at school were better than any I had ever received.
