Bible Notes
"I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh" (Ezek. 11:19)—This is a literal translation of the Hebrew; however, Moffatt suggests the rendering: "I will remove their hard nature and give them a nature that can be touched."
"The heaven of heavens" (II Chron. 6:18)—Some scholars take this as equivalent to "the highest heaven," in accord with a well-known Hebrew idiom. Compare the phrases: "Holy of holies" ("most holy"—Ex. 26:33), and "vanity of vanities" (i.e., "absolute vanity"—Eccl. 1:2). Moffatt translates: "The height of heaven itself;" and Smith: "The very highest heavens."
"God is a Spirit" (John 4:24)—It is of interest to note that Dr. Wescott, well-known as editor of the Greek New Testament, renders the original literally, "God is Spirit" (Commentary on St. John, Vol. I, p. 161); as do Moffatt, Weymouth, the Twentieth Century New Testament, margin of the Revised Version, Goodspeed, and other authorities.
