Through many vicissitudes Christian Science has been...

Through many vicissitudes Christian Science has been my constant companion and protection, always bringing me out on top. I can truthfully say that the sense of happiness gained through Christian Science has lengthened my days, and through membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, with participation in its varied activities, my usefulness in the world has been increased. Following in the train of uplifted thought, seeking first the kingdom of God, I have experienced and witnessed many physical healings, besides participating in increased harmony and supply which proceed from our heavenly Father-Mother God. Like thousands of others I now find the Bible a daily help.

The following is an instance which impressed me strongly and seems worth relating, as it shows the need for steadfastness in truth. I had rather neglected a heavy cold, and instead of improving, I grew worse, becoming weaker, losing appetite and weight, and developing a cough which became distressing, especially at night. One night I had coughed incessantly, and in the morning a serious symptom presented itself which terrified me for the moment. Very soon, though, I was aroused by the thought: This is unworthy! A Christian Scientist does not accept untoward conditions as real! This condition is here to be met and mastered in Science. Then a sudden reversal of thought was effected. "God is my Life" sounded in my consciousness, and the fear was quickly cast out by perfect Love. Our Leader's reference (Science and Health, p. 376) to the pallid invalid, and her declaration to the effect that good motives and acts are paramount in the economy of life, brought inspiration and relief, yet there was still a sharp pain in the chest. As the mental work continued, this pain moved, and I rejoiced, remembering our Leader's words (ibid., p. 419) and her advice to "move it off." When things seemed at their worst, a message came direct from the Bible: "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." The last phrase held my attention and led me to further self-examination. Traces of self-pity, self-righteousness, and even resentment were found, though it was thought these had already been overcome, and the work of ousting them afresh was so absorbing that the pain was quite forgotten; and that is the last I remember of it!

During the steady improvement which followed, only once was there a sign of relapse, and then a practitioner was notified, and help was lovingly and effectively given. That was three years ago and there has been no return of the difficulty. I spent not a single day in bed, though in materia medica this would have been a long illness. In Christian Science our remedy is ever at hand, uplifting, purifying, and strengthening while the healing goes on. This repulse of "the last enemy" after a period of over twenty years' immunity from invalidism, with healings of coughs, colds, rheumatism, ulcerated stomach, tonsillitis, lack, and many untoward conditions through the study of Christian Science, fills me with gratitude to God for the life-work of Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered this new-old religion and its element of Christian healing.
