In the year 1913, after I had had thirty years of trouble...
In the year 1913, after I had had thirty years of trouble and was gradually going blind, I finally broke down, realizing that drugs and my friends, the doctors, had no help for me. I was alone in the house when the thought came to me to try Christian Science. I called on a practitioner at once, and to my great delight I was healed instantaneously of nervous prostration, fear, and the desire to drink, gamble, and speculate. What joy to find that I really had a God! A week later I was healed of stomach trouble which I had had for many years, and was much better in many ways, realizing something of God's love.
I then had a great desire to understand Christian Science. About four months later catarrh appeared which lasted about two weeks and was very severe. Now, up to this time I had not overcome the desire for tobacco, and was just about to light a cigarette when the thought came to me, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." I disposed of the cigarette and never had any desire for tobacco again. The catarrh left me instantaneously and completely at the same time. This demonstration of the power of the First Commandment took place in a tobacco store which had been my place of business for twenty-one years.
My sight was greatly improved, and I have not worn glasses for years; the right eye has not opened, but I have better sight with one eye than I ever had with both eyes. The healing of so-called lack or depression was most complete. I am very grateful for a trip to our Mother Church, of which I am a member, also for membership in a branch church and for class instruction; and for the kind and unselfish help of the practitioner. All glory be to God for the truth and love revealed through Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy, and for our new Publishing House.
