The Privileges of Our Movement
At the midweek meetings in Christian Science churches testimonies are often heard of physical and other healings experienced through the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Oftentimes this experience is the convincing proof which arouses the reader's fuller interest in Christian Science. The healing operation of Truth taking place in the thought receptive to the spiritual teaching of this book necessarily increases this interest. There are to be found in the truths presented in Science and Health comfort, peace, and the spiritual satisfaction which feeds the hunger for good. It is helpful, therefore, to recall the circumstances which brought Science and Health into the world, and to consider what has followed as a sequence of its publication.
In 1866, Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science through spiritual discernment of the healing truths of the Bible. As a result of her continued study of the Bible, and after convincing proof of the truth she discovered, in 1875 she first published the Christian Science textbook. Had she done no more than this for the world, her name would have been great. But her love for her fellow men knew no bounds, and she desired to help the readers and students of her book in every way. She says on page xi of the Preface to Science and Health, "When God called the author to proclaim His Gospel to this age, there came also the charge to plant and water His vineyard." From this time until the close of her earthly experience she continued to unfold, through divine guidance, ways and means for making her teaching more widely available to mankind.
To understand Christian Science in its fullness and to realize the blessings which flow from an understanding of God, it is necessary to recognize that Science and Health contains the revelation of Truth, and that its author is the latter-day revelator; that her establishing of the institutions which further the Cause of Christian Science were necessarily contingent on her revelation. To reap the full fruitage of Christian Science, then, we must obey our Leader's directions in taking right human footsteps on our heavenward way.
