With gladness do I bear witness to one of the many...

With gladness do I bear witness to one of the many wonderful experiences which have ineffably enriched me since I began to follow the teachings of Christian Science.

In March, 1932, a loved one and I entrained at Bulawayo for Cape Town to embark for England. When we left Bulawayo I was endeavoring to overcome what is commonly known as malarial fever. I suffered from nausea during the train journey, which occupied nearly three days, and this trouble continued for eight more days on board ship, although I was being compassionately helped by a Christian Science practitioner, who was also a passenger. The ebbing of my strength as the days passed did not in the least impair my confidence in the ever-presence and allness of God, good. Continually I repeated to myself the following texts: "My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him;" "Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee;" and, "Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." Together with the foregoing Bible texts I strove to keep in my thought our Leader's instruction on page 495 of the textbook, to "cling steadfastly to God and His idea," as well as the remainder of the same paragraph.

To relieve my companion, who was not a Christian Scientist and who questioned the scientific fact of the allness and everywhereness of God, good, and the nothingness of evil, I consented to be examined by a doctor, but I refused to agree to be treated medically. After that I was in a malarial coma for a few days, and cerebral hemorrhage was diagnosed by the doctor first called in and by another doctor whom he consulted. While expressing the opinion that it was then too late to save me, they obtained my companion's consent to give me an injection. They stated, however, that I could not last through the night. When I was found to be alive in the morning, one of the doctors predicted that if I did recover I should be partially paralyzed. He further stated that when we arrived at the port, in less than a week, I should have to be transferred to a hospital, as I should not be able to walk for some weeks.
