Now that about thirteen years have passed since I first...
Now that about thirteen years have passed since I first became a student of Christian Science I wish to testify to my increasing appreciation of what it has done for me and is doing for all mankind.
Many happy years had been spent in hospital work, but as time went on I became convinced that materia medica was not the solution of the problems presented to doctors, nurses, and social workers. It was obvious that, as I then expressed it, the remedy was a change of heart in mankind which would abolish greed, lust, hatred, and other evil motives manifesting themselves in sickness. Nothing but Christian religion put into practice could possibly destroy these evils. I believe it was this conviction that prepared me for the acceptance of Christian Science when a member of my family invited me to read the Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly with her, for until that time I had regarded this religion as a "Boston fad." I had not read the textbook through before I decided to give its teachings an honest trial, and if I could prove for myself the healing power it claimed I determined to accept Christian Science as my religion.
A practitioner who had been one of Mrs. Eddy's students and a resident in her home helped me very much with the intellectual difficulties I at first encountered. Later he became my teacher and friend, always ready to encourage or to admonish me in my process of learning that "there is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter" (Science and Health, p. 468), and that God is literally All-in-all. Although I did not take up Christian Science for physical healing, through the change in my thinking I found chronic throat and nose difficulties, indigestion, and headaches disappearing; and though I had reached the age when materia medica teaches its followers that people cannot expect to resist the infirmities of age, I can gratefully say that I have never before enjoyed such good health; and I have proved that sudden healings of such things as severe colds, neuritis, and burns are not mere coincidences.
