In your issue of June 23 a clergyman is reported to have made the following astounding statement. Referring to the days when Christ Jesus healed the sick in Palestine, he said: "In their Lord's day, medical science was very backward, and, therefore, he cured the bodily diseases of the people, although obviously he was not eager to do that kind of work." There is no evidence of any sort to show that Christ Jesus "was not eager" to heal physical ailments. On the contrary, he made the ability to heal the sick by his spiritual method one of the tests of true discipleship when he said: "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." It is recorded that for about three hundred years after Christ Jesus' ascension, Christians continued to heal the sick and even in some instances to raise the dead.

The question arises, How did Christ Jesus heal the sick? He certainly did not use medical means. He spoke the word and it was done. He cured the sick through divinely mental means. He utilized the truth about God and man's relationship to Him, and thus destroyed the error in the mentality of his patients manifested in discordant physical conditions. On page 3 of her book "Rudimental Divine Science," Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Jesus' healing was spiritual in its nature, method, and design. He wrought the cure of disease through the divine Mind, which gives all true volition, impulse, and action; and destroys the mental error made manifest physically, and establishes the opposite manifestation of Truth upon the body in harmony and health."

Christian Scientists practice the method of Christ Jesus. They do not say that pain and disease do not seem real to the physical senses, but they do declare that these conditions are not created by God, and that, therefore, true Christians have the right to overcome these conditions as Christ Jesus did by knowing the truth which makes free.
