As a child I was not strong and had more than the usual...
As a child I was not strong and had more than the usual number of children's diseases. After growing to young womanhood, I suffered with an intestinal disorder which affected my whole system. It was impossible for me to walk any distance, and I spent the greater part of my time on a couch. The various medical doctors who attended me agreed in saying that I would outgrow this condition, but the disease became chronic.
Although I had seen the healing results of Christian Science in the case of a friend, I was very skeptical as to whether it would heal me. But the proof that I needed was not long delayed. The day this friend was leaving I had a very violent attack of acute gastritis. There was no medicine in the house that I could take, and when she learned of the situation she asked me if I should like to try her medicine. I told her she could treat me if she wanted to. This friend gave me a treatment in Christian Science and told me to eat my luncheon, assuring me that all was well. In less than half an hour I was completely well, and I have never suffered from that or any similar complaint from that day to this. I was healed, however, of more than gastritis. I was healed of the belief that I was God-forsaken, for it had been proved to me that God loved me; and, best of all, I could prove that He would take care of me always, for here was a Science that I could understand and demonstrate.
I studied the Lesson-Sermons given in the Christian Science Quarterly and tried to put into practice what I found. I knew that because this teaching was a Science it had to be demonstrated, and the only way I saw of demonstrating it was to make it practical in my daily living. Up to that time I had never heard that healing comes simply through reading Science and Health. I was suffering from many diseases, and was often literally bowed together so that I could not walk or stand upright. To my astonishment, as I continued to study Christian Science and live it to the best of my understanding, I found that I was growing better. Many diseases vanished without my knowing when they left. I would suddenly awaken to the fact that certain inharmonious conditions were gone. I had no treatments other than those previously referred to. These healings came solely through the study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings. They were slow but complete and permanent.
