The opening line of the Preface to Science and Health...
The opening line of the Preface to Science and Health reads, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." I am sincerely grateful that Christian Science is teaching me day by day to lean more and more upon "the sustaining infinite." Twelve years ago Christian Science was brought to my attention through a wonderful healing in my sister's home. Her ten-year-old son was struck and run over by an automobile, both front and rear wheels passing over his body. A bystander screamed, and the driver, becoming excited, backed the car across the child again. Medical attendants at the hospital where he was taken declared that he could live but a few hours because of internal injuries. However, he was given Christian Science treatment, and although he remained in an unconscious state for several hours, he was completely healed within twenty-four hours; in fact, so completely healed that he was able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with the family.
This incident brought the truth of this great healing power so forcibly to my thought that I became deeply interested and began the study of Christian Science at once. Since that time I have had many wonderful experiences and have enjoyed many healings, some of which have taken considerable time, while many more have been instantaneous. In my thought one of the most outstanding of these was the healing of severe attacks of gastritis of many years' standing. I had been treated by doctors many times for this trouble, but they could only relieve the immediate suffering temporarily with morphine. On this occasion I was awakened about two o'clock in the morning with severe pain. My wife went next door to a practitioner for help, which was immediately given. By the time my wife had returned all pain had left me, and never returned.
I am grateful that I have been healed of the tobacco habit also. For many years I was a heavy smoker, and although I had tried many times to stop I always seemed unable to free myself from the desire to continue. I asked for Christian Science treatment and took my stand for right by refusing to smoke, and by knowing that evil in the form of a bad habit had no power to make me desire it longer. This thought completely freed me, and I have never experienced the slightest desire for tobacco since.
