From my very childhood I loved to trust in God and to think of Him as always near me and able to help me. When I grew to girlhood I felt a growing desire to understand and know Him better, and since the teachings of the church to which I belonged were not able to satisfy me, I often turned again to my childlike faith. In later years my husband and I frequently used to talk about religion. We went to Java, made new friends, and were always searching for spiritual light, but at last we decided that undoubtedly the best way of living would be to try to be good and to put into practice the teachings of Jesus as faithfully as possible, especially his Sermon on the Mount.
In 1924 Christian Science was mentioned to me in the course of a conversation with a friend, who said that if I would like to know something about it she would lend me a book. I gladly accepted, for I still liked to investigate things about God. The next morning she brought me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and I started to read. The Preface appealed to me very much, and before I was through with the first chapter I was absolutely convinced that this book contained the answer to all my questions.
At that time our little two-year-old daughter was suffering from a chronic bowel trouble. I had already consulted four physicians, one of whom prescribed a diet, with only a few things allowed and many forbidden, stating that if I kept this diet strictly the child might get over the trouble in about ten years. As I knew of no better way I decided to follow his advice; but there was no improvement. Then came that blessed day in which the Christian Science textbook was handed to me. One of the first things that became clear to me was that the child could not be harmed by food, and I suggested that we give up the diet. My husband consented, and from that very moment the child ate anything she wished, while I went on reading the textbook and rejoicing over it. The result was that from the day we dropped the diet the condition greatly improved, and after three weeks she was entirely healed. She is now in her twelfth year and has never had a return of the complaint.
