A correspondent in your issue of October 13 is mistaken...

West London Observer

A correspondent in your issue of October 13 is mistaken in his estimate of Christian Science. One of the definitions of a "Christian," taken from a well-known dictionary, is "one whose profession and life conform to the teaching and example of Christ;" and Christ Jesus himself defined his follower when he said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." Christian Scientists have accepted this test of discipleship and, in the measure of their spiritual understanding, are healing the sick and reforming the sinner in the way taught by the Master.

Through her earnest study of the Bible, Mary Baker Eddy discerned that there was a spiritual law underlying the works of the prophets, Christ Jesus, his disciples, and the early Christians, and this law she has discovered and given to the world in Christian Science, which she has defined as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony" (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 1). Christian Science, therefore, is demonstrable Christian knowledge.

Your correspondent's estiamte of Mrs. Eddy is as erroneous as his opinion of the religion she founded. Anyone who will read either of her approved biographies, "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur, or "Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Portrait" by Dr. Lyman P. Powell, will realize that her life and work were inspired wholly by her love for God and her compassion for humanity.
