In Isaiah we read, "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined." For ten years before I came into Christian Science my life seemed to be one of continuous unhappiness, confusion, and sorrow, and I was truly walking "in darkness," but through the study of this truth I have since seen "a great light" and have found true peace and happiness.
One day over eight years ago I found a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which belonged to the young woman who shared my room; and as I was not a member of any church and had never had any faith in material means of healing, I was interested at once. Since then my life has changed completely. I had been engaged in professional work, but was then led into the business world. Five years ago I left my position in an eastern city to return to California. From the moment I arrived error seemed to strike at me from all sides, and this continued for about two years. There was constant interference and obstruction to be overcome, but through it all Christian Science sustained, protected, and guided me.
I am grateful for the loving help of a practitioner at this time. One experience always stands out to me. I had written to her for absent treatment, and a day or two later felt quite ill, yet had a sense of being sustained. In the night I awoke feeling very miserable. I sat up in the dark and, as I recall, seemed to be struggling to reach something I needed, when quite suddenly I heard these words as clear as a voice: "This is not the real man." I was instantaneously healed, and shall always remember the glimpse of reality which came to me in that instant. Shortly afterward I was offered a much better position in another city; and a complete change of environment was made. At the end of two years, after moving from one city and position to another, I joined a Christian Science Society and then began to experience harmony.
