Item of Interest

For some years the need for a thrift plan for employees of The Mother Church and The Christian Science Publishing Society has been evident. After much thought and prayerful attention a plan was worked out and an organization formed by The Christian Science Board of Directors, called "The Christian Science Thrift Association." In a statement issued by the Trustees of the Association recently, in which the thrift and income plan was described, it was said: "The plan contains broad and flexible principles. Its keynote is thrift and recognition of faithful service."

The provision for participation in the Thrift Association has already been taken advantage of by a substantial number of the employees and officers of The Mother Church, of the Publishing Society, of the charitable institutions of the Christian Science movement, and the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy.

In order to answer some questions from the Christian Scientists in the Field, it can be said that this plan is unique in character, designed especially to meet the needs of the employees referred to, but this plan is not capable of being extended to Christian Scientists in the Field. It offers to employees a type of thrift that results from wise and conscientious efforts, but is a group plan which includes particular provision based upon the peculiar needs. The members make periodical deposits of small amounts which, at the time of retirement, purchase annuities. Membership is voluntary. The statement of the Trustees concludes with the following: "Unselfishly constructed, the plan aims at values of a deep and lasting nature for its members."
