I desire to express my gratitude for the Christian Science...
I desire to express my gratitude for the Christian Science periodicals, especially The Christian Science Monitor, that great international daily newspaper. I have found the metaphysical articles in all the periodicals abreast of the times; and, dealing as they do with prevalent conditions, they have served as helpful guides for me in my daily work.
A personal experience in the early part of 1931 furnished me with a splendid proof of the efficacy of Christian Science. At that time I found myself without employment because of conditions for which I was responsible. Soon the realization came that while I was not responsible for the conditions, I was responsible for what I made of those conditions. During this period of unemployment a generous portion of my time was spent in the Christian Science Reading Rooms. The thing for which I am most grateful in this entire experience is the amount of understanding which came to me as a result of this opportunity to study.
After about three months' continuance of this condition I was led to ask counsel of a friend. As a result of his kindly and prayerful thought I was advised to apply to a former employer. To do this it was necessary for me to overcome a false sense of pride. When I finally did apply to him, I was immediately given a position, although at the time there seemed to be no vacancy in the organization. About one week prior to my acceptance of the position I spent some time trying to realize the truth of the statement that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). I saw that there might easily be a difference between our human needs and our human wants or desires. I made up a list of our needs and arrived at a necessary weekly sum. When the question of salary was discussed with this former employer, I was offered exactly this amount of money. Naturally I was very grateful for this demonstration of sufficiency.
