The Value of Feeling

The question of feeling calls for intelligent analysis since it is one of the most influential factors in human lives, swaying them wrongly or rightly. Which shall it be for us—bane or blessing? That is, shall we regard feeling as material and discordant, or shall we understand true feeling to be spiritual and concordant?

The Christian Scientist takes as his premise and conclusion Spirit and its concord. He turns from the material sense of creation to its spiritual essence and harmony, and by this scientific mental stand brings spiritual dominion into his own experience and that of others. If troubled, for instance, with a feeling of fatigue or of disease, he strives to realize the divine energy and harmony of Spirit by claiming as his own that spiritual sense with which Spirit endows its likeness. The health and energy of Spirit are always expressed through spiritual man, and he is always aware of them through spiritual sense.

Mrs. Eddy writes (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 81), "The spirit of Truth extinguishes false thinking, feeling, and acting." The Christian Scientist finds that he need no longer be the victim of false feelings, either mental, moral, or physical, for "the spirit of Truth" breathes through the teachings of Christian Science, quickening spiritual sense and destroying material sense. In place of the fear or the love of sin, Christian Science establishes the love of holiness and its successful quest. Whereas he formerly believed himself to be separated from God, good, and therefore was the victim of wrong feelings, the Christian Scientist is now becoming their master, and he is constantly gladdened by fresh proofs of his unity with God, pure Mind. Knowing that man is born of Spirit and Truth, he feels himself animated by the spirit of truthfulness, by joy and confidence in the right, and in the hour of temptation, spiritual vision and strength are his defense.
