Simplicity: the First Essential
In studying the lives of the great spiritual figures in the world's history, one notices that the emphasis seems to be in the first place upon their simplicity of character. Abraham, Moses, the prophets; above all Christ Jesus; later, Paul; and in our time, Mrs. Eddy—these showed beautiful simplicity in their lives. Such simplicity was coincident with real goodness and spirituality. The disciples whom Jesus called to highest ministry were for the most part simple craftsmen, and their simplicity enabled them to recognize the truth immediately and leave all to follow Christ Jesus. Since simplicity is an outstanding attribute of all these individuals, we should strive to realize that we, also, can reflect this sweet quality.
In the lives of these and other spiritual leaders simplicity is shown in unswerving singleness of purpose, in strong faith that knows but one goal and turns not "to the right hand or to the left." It is shown in absence of ostentation and in affection. Simplicity neither poses nor plays a part, but is natural, quiet, sincere, and humble. It is manifested in an unselfish outpouring of happiness and love, even as the skylark pours out its song of joy; indeed, a surrender of selfish thought often accompanies pure simplicity. The outpouring of love does not mean merely fluent and facile talk. Moses thought that he could not express himself clearly and easily, yet through his simplicity came a tremendous outpouring of reflected love. Shakespeare, "great poet of humanity," as Mrs. Eddy calls him on page 66 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," clearly saw the test to be applied when, in "A Midsummer Night's Dream," he put into the mouth of one of his characters the following words applicable to the subject:
