I have received innumerable blessings through the study...
I have received innumerable blessings through the study of Christian Science, though until now I have never recorded my gratitude through the columns of our periodicals. I became interested in Christian Science about twenty-five years ago, not for physical healing, but because I was unhappy and discontented with life in general; and although I believed in God there seemed no way of approach to Him. What distressed me most at that time was that my life seemed so utterly useless and it did not matter whether I lived or died. About that time I began to pray earnestly to God, in the best way I knew, that He would show me what to do. Shortly after this I was told of Christian Science and was taken by a friend to a testimony meeting. I shall never forget that meeting. I knew at once that I had found what I was seeking, a loving God and a practical religion. I borrowed the textbook, and although I did not seem to understand much of it during that first reading I was healed of insomnia, from which I had suffered for many years.
After being in Science two or three years I fractured my wrist while roller skating. I at once asked for Christian Science treatment, and within about three days all pain left me, so that I was able to row on the river and play tennis. There remained a certain amount of however, which gave my arm a crooked appearance. In order to satisfy my father I had my wrist examined by the family doctor some weeks later. He stated that there had been a bad fracture but that it had been perfectly set, and expressed the greatest astonishment that I had been able to use my hand all the time and that it had remained supple, whereas he would have put it in splints for six weeks and at the end of that time I should have had a stiff wrist.
Another very interesting healing was that of chilblains, with which I had been troubled ever since coming back from the tropics. On several occasions I had Christian Science treatment for this trouble, but still it recurred every winter and at times I was very much discouraged, especially when I was called upon to undertake work in a Christian Science Reading Room and knew how conspicuous my hands would be. One day while reading our Leader's writings I was impressed by this passage in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 355): "Learn what in thine own mentality is unlike 'the anointed,' and cast it out." As I pondered these words I saw that I had much wrong thinking to cast out, such as thoughts of criticism, impatience, and irritation; but I also saw that these could be overcome by prayer, watching, and working, and in a very short time after that the chilblains began to disappear and they have never never returned.
