The article on Christian Science in the Volksstimme of October 15 requires some explanation. Christian Science is the reinstatement of primitive Christianity and is entirely founded on the Bible. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy is not a Bible, but a key or commentary to the Bible. In teaching that man is the image and likeness of God, Christian Science accepts the first chapter of Genesis, where we read, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him."

Healing in Christian Science comes through the realization of the truth to which Jesus pointed in his words, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Jesus sometimes healed the sick even when they were at a distance from him, as in the case of the centurion's servant. Was not that Christian? In performing his healings he did not act contrary to the law of God. God is not the originator of sickness. Jesus made this clear when after healing a woman he replied to his accusers, "And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?"

The followers of Christian Science have no quarrel with the medical faculty. They know and acknowledge that the physician consecrates his life to the service of mankind, sometimes sacrificing his own comfort that the sufferings of men may be lessened. Many physicians are glad to admit that Christian Science heals; they know, furthermore, that even medical treatment does not altogether disregard the patient's mental state. That Christian Science has caused incalculable damage is not in accordance with facts. The truth is that many of its followers have been brought back from the brink of the grave, back to a life that is a blessing to many others. It must be said that between the theories of Coué and the teachings of Mrs. Eddy there is an impassable gulf fixed. Christian Science treatment is not human will. It is divine Love that accomplishes the healing in Christian Science, that Love which "forgiveth all thine iniquities" and "healeth all thy diseases."
