Kindly allow me to comment upon the letter of "R. D.,"...

Newcastle Journal

Kindly allow me to comment upon the letter of "R. D.," which appeared in the Newcastle Journal. He objects to my reference to Christ Jesus as the Way-shower, suggests that Christian Scientists twist the Scriptures to suit themselves, quotes part of a verse in an attempt to prove that the devil is real, but omits another part of the same verse which states that "there is no truth in him," and strongly denounces Christian Science teaching as illusory. That your correspondent is not well fitted to judge the teachings of Christian Science is obvious from his letter, which reveals that he believes Jesus to be God. He should study the Gospels in this connection before offering further criticism. He should also read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and test the teachings of Christian Science for himself. Until he has done this his denunciation must be unimpressive.

He will read in the textbook (p. 313), "The term Christ Jesus, or Jesus the Christ (to give the full and proper translation of the Greek), may be rendered 'Jesus the anointed,' Jesus the God-crowned or the divinely royal man." He will also read (p. 547): "The Scriptures are very sacred. Our aim must be to have them understood spiritually, for only by this understanding can truth be gained."
