A doctor who contributes to your paper is always progressive...

A doctor who contributes to your paper is always progressive, and usually fair. I am sure he would not intentionally give Christian Scientists offense. In his column in your November 13 issue he attributes to "fad healing cults" the tendency to assign disease to "a mental error," and goes on to prove to his own satisfaction that this cannot be so, at least so far as one disease which he names is concerned. It should not be news to him that so-called germ diseases are being healed by Christian Science, malaria not excepted. Medical writers freely acknowledge that such mental states as fear, jealousy, or hatred may directly result in diseased bodily conditions. The time has come when they should be equally ready to admit that a right mental state can ward off or cure disease. The very refusal of the medical workers whose conclusions the doctor indorses, to concede victory to a germ, is itself a hint of the value of a right mental attitude.

The fundamental fact, beyond and above all medical and material theories, is that in God is an entirely safe habitation for man, God's image and likeness. Christian Scientists should not be criticized for upholding and proving this. Their progress in this all-important realm of research confirms amply Mrs. Eddy's declaration on page 347 of Science and Health: "The dream that matter and error are something must yield to reason and revelation. Then mortals will behold the nothingness of sickness and sin, and sin and sickness will disappear from consciousness."
