Some twenty-two years ago, even before I was old enough...
Some twenty-two years ago, even before I was old enough to enter a saloon, I began drinking alcoholic liquor. At that time I thought it quite an honor to drink. Naturally in later years it became a rather undesirable habit. It was the cause of my losing a very good position, resulting in embarrassment to my family. In August, 1925, I left my family so that I might be free to drink as I pleased. While away I was given a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Although I knew little of its value at that time I kept the book and am grateful to the giver for the truly good intentions which must have been in her thought at that time.
In January, 1926, I returned to my family. I was still drinking, and forgot all about family, business, and all but the one thing—making enough to buy the necessary amount of alcohol. In August, 1928, I left home again, and again I came in contact with a Christian Scientist. It was at this place that I received my first real thought on Christian Science. I stayed but a short time on this trip, and after returning home I seemed to have the desire for drink more than ever. I was now buying alcohol by the gallon and had it hidden in various places about my house and garage so that if it was not possible to take a drink in one place I could in another, so that my family would not see me. The last two weeks in September, 1929, I was drunk about all the time and I ate but perhaps four or five full meals during that drinking spell. One evening when I came home I called a friend who I knew was a Christian Scientist. This person called a member of the church I now attend. Never did anyone talk to me as he did; I could hardly believe that anyone could be so kind to a drunken man. He referred me to several Christian Science practitioners; and for the help and kind words received I am most grateful.
The next day, after drinking all forenoon and part of the afternoon, I finally got up enough courage to call on one of these practitioners. I fairly staggered into her home. I was healed instantly, and how grateful I am for the help that was so lovingly given. From that day my desire for drink left me entirely.
