Progress and Rewards

ALTHOUGH earnest Christian Scientists realize that they need to gain familiarity with the letter of Christian Science, they are concerned to an even greater extent with imbibing the healing spirit of Christian Science. In answer to the question in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 495), "How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of Christian Science?" Mrs. Eddy writes, in part, "Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit."

A person having a knowledge of the letter of Christian Science without having the spirit might be likened to a law student who had spent years in schools and colleges learning the letter of law, but who had never written a brief, appeared in court, or gained any practical experience in legal practice. His learning might be admired, but in order that his knowledge should bless him or be useful to others he must utilize and prove the letter of which he has gained the knowledge. A person might have some of the letter of Christian Science without the spirit, but it would seem improbable that, having gained the spirit, he would not have a genuine desire to acquire more of the letter also.

The spirit of Christian Science might be described as a rich quality of faith in the power and unchanging love of God, which cannot be shaken; a faith that refuses to doubt God's goodness even though the appearances are contrary to that which seems desirable and good; a state of thought which knows that God's law of love is unfailing, ever present, and changeless.
