Our English Services
IN those countries where the English language is not the native tongue surprise is sometimes expressed because Christian Science services are held in the English language in addition to those held in the language of the country. It will readily be seen, however, that the great value of holding English services in other than English-speaking countries lies in the fact that the purpose underlying this work tends to promote the brotherhood of man; and men and women of many nationalities and races are participating in these services. The great value of the Christian Science textbook lies in the clear expression of the author's revelation; and most people will agree that the best impression of any literary work can be gained by reading it in the language in which the book was written.
On page 349 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "The chief difficulty in conveying the teachings of divine Science accurately to human thought lies in this, that like all other languages, English is inadequate to the expression of spiritual conceptions and propositions, because one is obliged to use material terms in dealing with spiritual ideas." Needless to say, our Leader was best fitted to translate the spiritual ideas revealed to her into human language, and her choice of words most nearly conveys her meaning.
A Christian Science lecturer once addressed his audience in words something like these: I am speaking to you in the English language, but the language of Christian Science is the language of the heart, and everyone having a heart may understand this language.
