"They shall be all taught of God"
The well-known saying to the effect that one is "never too old to learn" indicates a great truth. The capacity to learn is God-given, and is independent of age or time; it involves a spirit of receptivity, a willingness to be taught.
Throughout the world today many men and women who in the past had felt that their life-work lay in a certain direction are finding themselves faced with the necessity of learning a new trade or profession, and of spending their time in surroundings and work for which they may feel themselves unfitted. Christian Science brings to them a message of courage and hope by showing them how to prove the spiritual truth underlying the wise saying that no one is ever "too old to learn." They learn too that, however difficult may seem the necessity of going to school again, it has often proved of incalculable value; for through such experience they have been obliged to develop the quality of teachableness, of humble receptivity.
The student of Christian Science faced with the necessity of taking up fresh work, finds inspiration from these words on pages 323 and 324 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy: "Willingness to become as a little child and to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of the advanced idea." He finds that as he is willing to "become as a little child," so he will experience the child's delight and ease in learning something new, and the child's happiness in satisfactory accomplishment in any fresh line of work. What normal child ever doubted his ability to learn some new thing; or, having failed at the first try to succeed at his unaccustomed task, did not joyfully and eagerly try again with no trace of discouragement to hinder his successful accomplishment after a second, third, or even a later attempt!
