Undivided Reliance
Christian Science brings to the mental darkness of one who believes himself physically sick the light of spiritual understanding, the power of divine Love, which melts away fear and blots out the picture of disease. Both sickness and sin, as well as other discords, are healed in Christian Science soleley through the workings of God, divine Principle, through the healing operation of spiritual law in human consciousness.
Having been educated to regard health as physical, the invalid under medical treatment has consistently employed physical means in order to rid himself of disease. Later, failing to recover, he may, in desperation, have sent for a Christian Science practitioner, then to find his thought being turned from physiology to divine metaphysics. With amazement he learns that, as Mrs. Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 268), "God's preparations for the sick are potions of His own qualities." No longer need he think about medical prescriptions, but about spiritual qualities, such as peace, purity, wisdom, joy, every one available to him, unfailing, and health-giving. No longer need he fear matter, and no longer may he regard it as remedial. Since disease is but erroneous thought objectified on the body, the need is for the healing efficacy of divine Mind.
In speaking of Jesus and his healing ministry, Mrs. Eddy writes (Message to The Mother Church for 1901, p. 23): "He was ultra; he was a reformer; he laid the axe at the root of all error, amalgamation, and compounds. He used no material medicine, nor recommended it, and taught his disciples and followers to do likewise."
