The Five Porches

With wonder do we view that Sabbath day In far-away Jerusalem, the old. Through surging narrow streets the faint and bold
Moved onward, paused. An opening in the way
Revealed five porches where the infirm lay
In impotence. No shepherd to this fold!
But to the Stranger, one his story told,
And light glowed round him in a golden ray.

For Jesus saw that ignorance and dread
And sin were impotent; and so he freed
This infirm one. And then: Arise, he said,
And bade him "sin no more" in word or deed.
Thus was established in this one who heard,
The fane of Truth, whose builder is the Word.
