Spiritual Progress

[Written Especially for Young People]

In the second chapter of Luke there is related a simple account showing how our beloved Master at an early age was filled with wisdom and understanding, and how even in childhood he pondered "the deep things of God." Luke records that Jesus had gone from Nazareth to Jerusalem with Mary and Joseph for the feast of the Passover. On the return journey Mary and Joseph, supposing him to be with other members of the company, did not discover that he was not among them until they had completed a full day's travel. Most of us remember that Jesus was found "in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions." The account closes with the statement that "Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."

It was his understanding and knowledge of God and his steadfast purpose to live in accordance with God's law of love and righteousness which later enabled Jesus to carry on his healing ministry. Our revered Leader says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 166): "This spiritual idea, or Christ, entered into the minutiæ of the life of the personal Jesus. It made him an honest man, a good carpenter, and a good man, before it could make him the glorified." Christ Jesus is our Way-shower, and we, like him, must learn to think upon "the deep things of God."

As students of Christian Science we attend our Sunday school and church services and study the Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly regularly, that we may learn to understand and know God, divine Truth, Life, and Love. The loving help given by our Sunday school teachers aids us in our work, both teachers and pupils receiving many blessings through their study and discussions. Thus we learn how to meet the problems that present themselves to us in our school work and daily activities; and so, step by step, we are preparing ourselves for church membership and service to the Cause of Christian Science and to mankind. What a joy it is to realize that in this way we are indeed following the example of Jesus! And in the degree that we live the truth we know, we too shall increase in wisdom and understanding.
