I have been a student of Christian Science for more than...
I have been a student of Christian Science for more than twenty years, and it is with much pleasure that I send this testimony.
Being a part-blood Shawnee Indian I was reared in close association with this tribe in the old Indian Territory, now a part of the state of Oklahoma. It was a wild country in those days, and unfortunately I grew up wild with the country. I became a confirmed liquor addict, and for many years, while a traveling salesman in this territory, I purchased four quarts of whisky every Monday night before starting out on my trip. Liquor has always been prohibited in Indian country, so my weekly supply was obtained from a town in an adjoining state.
After many years my health failed me and I was a physical wreck. My nerves were shattered, I was in a palsied condition, and partially paralyzed. The physician told me that it was absolutely necessary that I give up liquor. This I did for only about three days; often before I had tried to stop drinking and could not. I seemed quite at the mercy of this terrible obsession for drink. A friend, knowing my condition, asked me to try Christian Science treatment and I agreed to do so, more with the idea of stopping an argument, for, like so many others who have no understanding of this truth, I had no faith in it. The next day, Sunday, I was asked to call at my friend's house at a certain hour. I did so, and there met a Christian Science practitioner, who informed me that I could be healed if I was sincere in my desire to reform. I had little faith, but allowed the work to begin. The Monday night following I purchased only two quarts of whisky. Later I opened one of the bottles with an old traveling companion and took one drink with him. It had neither the taste nor the effect it formerly had. I did not care for it, and, to my friend's surprise, I gave him both bottles. When I returned from my trip the latter part of the week I was a well man. All traces of illness were gone and my nerves were entirely normal. This was more than twenty years ago, and to this day I have never touched a drop of liquor; nor have I had a desire for it.
