I was a very unhappy woman when I first heard of Christian Science twenty-two years ago. I was a chronic invalid, and practically at the end of my tether; the doctor had told me he could do nothing more for me. I had gone through a "rest cure" at home, on a strict diet, with a hospital nurse in attendance, and had got up worse than before. I saw clearly how hopeless it was to expect any relief for my condition through material remedies. Whichever way I looked there seemed to be no outlet, and my anguish of mind was terrible during the long sleepless nights. Mrs. Eddy says in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 1), that "desire is prayer." One night I began to think of religion and of God, who seemed to be so remote; and in my despair I prayed for faith. My "extremity" was "God's opportunity," for shortly afterward Science and Health was lent me. Through its study I was healed of acute dyspepsia, insomnia, severe headaches which prostrated me for days, gout, and several other discordant physical conditions. A great sense of peace replaced my distress of mind, in spite of the fact that I went through a great sorrow at the time and other very sad experiences as well.
It has been my privilege to be a worker in the branch church to which I belong and to take up healing work, besides being a member of The Mother Church and receiving class instruction. I am profoundly grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her wonderful discovery as given in her textbook: it is indeed the Comforter, and a wonderful blessing to all those who honestly put its teachings into practice.
