Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

There is encouraging evidence throughout the state that the editors and publishers are holding our Cause in increasingly high respect. The following appeared in the Forum column of a weekly religious denominational newspaper: "Depression or no depression, one of the most flourishing journals in America is The Christian Science Monitor. It owes its success to its able editors, its enterprising advertising men, and loyal readers. Some ... publications have one of these blessings, a few have two, but none perhaps has all three. If ... readers were one half as loyal as readers of The Christian Science Monitor are to their sheet, ... journalism, ignoring other handicaps, could make great progress."

In Stamford a minister preached a series of sermons on various Christian faiths. His sermon on Christian Science was altogether highly complimentary. The following is a noteworthy paragraph of the sermon as reported in the press: "Christian Scientists have a living and a radiant faith. Religion is not a perfunctory thing with them; it is a joy and sustaining influence in their daily work, and a practical element in their daily life. Christian Scientists attend church with great devotion, often putting others to shame in this respect. It is my understanding that no Christian Science church is dedicated until all bills are paid. Christian Scientists think kindly of other people, and feel that evil thoughts are injurious. They read their Bible every day. They do more than read their Bibles, they study their Bibles, and are genuine seekers of the truth. I know of no other religious group that is so devoted to the reading of the Bible as these people. Christian Scientists believe in health and many have found freedom from sickness and trouble through this faith. This requires no work of magic, and even medical practitioners acknowledge their results. This movement has brought peace to many troubled minds, inner satisfaction to souls restless and disturbed. It has fostered a radiant optimism which pervades all its teachings. Christian Scientists find God everywhere, in all human life and in every situation."

One church has for years assigned two of its members to read the Lesson-Sermon in the state prison at Wethersfield to a group of interested men, during the hour of the Sunday school services on Sunday morning. On the adjournment of this service, copies of the Christian Science Sentinel and The Christian Science Monitor are distributed to any inmate desiring them. During the previous twelve months, nine hundred and twenty-seven Monitors and nine hundred and ninety Sentinels of current issue, eight thousand five hundred and ninety-eight donated Monitors, approximately one hundred Quarterlies, and twenty-eight vest pocket Hymnals have been distributed at the state prison during the year.
