Before We Call

Before we call He answers,
And while we speak He hears;
Our faintest supplication
Rises to listening ears.

If we but stretch out trembling
And eager hands in prayer,
If we lift feeble voices
Above the misty air,

And if we turn from matter
With its poor sense of gain
To seek for Spirit's treasure,
The way will open plain.

The promise has been given,
The Word that never fails.
To rod and staff are added
The hope that e'er prevails.

What manna for our hunger,
What peace to calm our woe!
We turn from human dreaming,
And behold its shadows go.

Lo! while the night still lowers,
The sun of hope appears;
Before we call He answers,
And while we speak He hears.
