It is with deepest gratitude that I give this testimony...
It is with deepest gratitude that I give this testimony in behalf of the healing power of Christian Science. I first heard of it about twenty years ago from a friend who recounted to me many beautiful healings she had received through the application of this truth. She also told of the healing of a little orphan girl who had been born blind, and whose sight was restored through Christian Science treatment when she was nine years of age. I had the pleasure of seeing this girl when she was about eighteen years of age. Not knowing anything of Christian Science the first thing I did was to notice her eyes, and I found she could see perfectly. The healing of this girl was what impressed me, and I decided to find out what kind of religion this was that could bring about such a wonderful healing. I had been a member of an orthodox church for several years, but had never before witnessed any such healings through prayer. Although this healing impressed me, I did not attend the Christian Science church regularly or study diligently until about seven years ago.
In the meantime I was presented with a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and while reading this little book, which has since become so precious to me, I was healed of the need of glasses which I had worn about twenty-five years. For this healing of spiritual blindness—for having had my eyes opened to what God really is and man's relationship to Him—I am indeed grateful. From that time on I have been endeavoring to seek more fully to understand the Master's words, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Since making this decision I have had many beautiful healings, some with the loving help of practitioners and some through my own understanding of the truth that sets free. Among the healings are those of chronic stomach and bowel trouble and a bad case of influenza, which was met so quickly that in a couple of days I was able to care for other members of the family, not interested in Christian Science, who were ill for weeks.
I have also been able to overcome the fear of lightning, of which I had had a great dread ever since I was a child. The testing time came to me when lightning struck the corner of our house and the room in which I was became enveloped with flames. I knew that God was not in the lightning, and needless to say there was no damage done; and I was grateful for this test. Cuts, bruises, and burns used to be quite a problem to me before taking up the study of this truth, but now they are as nothing, for "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) has been a great help to me. A growth on the heel of my foot which had bothered me ever since I was a little girl has disappeared.
