Deity Outlines

A YOUNG pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School was asked why he prayed; and his answer was, "To change my thoughts about God." He then went on to explain that God's thoughts about him were always right, but his thoughts about God were often wrong.

The simplicity and directness of the answer were illuminating, pointing to one of the fundamentals of Christian Science teaching, namely, that it is a fact that God and His universe, including man, have been, are, and always will be perfect and complete. God's purpose is that of all-satisfying good, bound up with His unalterable divine wisdom: "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Accepting this statement, we can see that a change in our thinking may be necessary, in order to receive "thoughts of peace, and not of evil."

The chapter on Prayer in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy points out the necessity for the prayer of affirmation, realization, and demonstration of the omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience of God. This demands the exclusion of every thought that does not lead to an expected good end.
